PhD Studentship: Climate Change and Insurance (Exeter)

The Exeter Climate Systems research centre at the University of Exeter and Willis Re (London), a global reinsurance broker, are seeking an exceptional candidate for a jointly supervised NERC funded PhD studentship.

The candidate will require a relevant Mathematics/Statistics upper second class honours, or lower second class honours + MSC.

The aim of this interdisciplinary project is to quantify the trends in extreme extratropical cyclones in Europe and the related impacts on the design of non-indemnity reinsurance contracts such as catastrophe bonds.

The project combines ideas from atmospheric and climate science with statistical models to tackle a problem in finance and insurance in a new, exciting interdisciplinary approach. The student will be supervised by Dr Renato Vitolo and Professor David Stephenson (University of Exeter) and co-supervised by Mr Ian Cook, chief actuary at Willis Re.
