Focusing my Job Search Criterea

I read the “Your dream job” article the other day and it got me thinking (as it was meant to I guess!).  It was pretty hard to reduce my list down to five items of importance for a new job, but it was definitely a worthwhile exercise to force me to prioritise my wishes.  It made me think back on the jobs that I have had, analysing the perks and annoyances of each job, in order to focus on what I would want out of my next employment.

I’m not going to bore you with the outcome, but I was pleased to note that I have been looking at the right sort of positions in my job search.  I hadn’t, however, truly understood the importance that I place on a working environment. This is a part of a job that can only really be assessed if an on-site interview is obtained and, even then, only an initial impression of the working environment can be taken.

A big question in my mind is: can one afford to be ‘picky’ about such things if a job offer is on the table?  It is easy to say “yes, for the sake of personal happiness”, but when it comes to the crunch I just hope that I am able to stick with this principle.  I am going to keep my dream job list on hand to try and ensure that I don’t take a job for the wrong reasons.
